To legally transfer ownership, the seller must sign the back of the original Georgia Certificate of Title. Every owner listed on the front must sign as a seller. Bring your properly signed title to the Paulding County Tax Commissioner’s Office in nearby Dallas to complete the transfer and put the car in your name.
You will be responsible for paying standard title and registration fees, plus the TAVT, when you put the car in your name. The state calculates the TAVT based on the fair market value of the vehicle determined by the Department of Revenue, not the cash amount you handed the seller.
Georgia gives you a strict seven-day grace period to drive your newly purchased car without a license plate. To drive legally during this week, you must keep the fully signed and dated Bill of Sale, the properly signed title, and your active proof of insurance inside the car. These documents prove to law enforcement officers that you just bought the vehicle.
A lien means a bank or lender still has a financial claim on the vehicle. Look at the front of the Georgia title to find any active lienholders. If you see a lender listed, the seller must provide you with an official paper lien release document from that bank before you can get a clear title in your name.
