On the back of your New Jersey Certificate of Title, you must fill out all the required information in the "Assignment of Certificate of Ownership" section. This includes:
The buyer's full name, address, and driver's license number.
The current odometer reading.
The date of the sale.
The purchase price.

Important: Do not sign the title until the sale is finalized and all information is filled in. If you make a mistake, you will need to apply for a duplicate title.
If your title is lost or destroyed, you must apply for a duplicate title from the NJMVC before you can sell the vehicle. No. Private sellers do not collect sales tax. The buyer is responsible for paying the sales tax directly to the NJMVC when they go to transfer the title and register the vehicle. The tax is calculated based on the purchase price.
You must remove your license plates from the car before the buyer takes possession. The plates belong to you, not the vehicle. After removing them, you should surrender them to an NJMVC agency or mail them to the NJMVC. Turning in your plates is a critical step to ensure you are no longer liable for the vehicle and to cancel your insurance policy.
Your main protection is removing your license plates and surrendering them to the NJMVC. You should also provide the buyer with a properly filled-out title, including the correct purchase price and date, and keep a copy of the Bill of Sale for your records.
