Within 15 days of purchase, take the signed and notarized title, a completed Title and Registration Application, proof of a passing emissions test (if required), and proof of Arizona auto insurance to an MVD office or authorized third-party provider. You will pay the VLT and other fees to get the vehicle titled and registered in your name.
While not legally required if the title is properly signed and notarized, a bill of sale is strongly recommended. It acts as your receipt and proof of the transaction details. It should include the vehicle's information (year, make, model, VIN), purchase price, sale date, and the names and signatures of both the buyer and seller.
Thoroughly inspect the car’s exterior for sun damage and rust, and check the interior for wear, especially on the dashboard and seats due to the intense heat. On a test drive, pay close attention to the air conditioning system, engine performance, and braking. For complete confidence, consider having a trusted mechanic perform a pre-purchase inspection.
Arizona requires emissions inspections for vehicles registered in the metro Phoenix and Tucson areas (Maricopa and Pima counties). The seller is legally required to provide you with a valid emissions certificate at the time of sale if you live in one of these areas. Vehicles from the last five model years are typically exempt. There is no statewide safety inspection.
When buying a car in Arizona, the seller must give you the original paper title. Both you and the seller must sign and date the back of the title. Importantly, your signatures must be notarized. The seller’s name on the title must match their photo ID. Check for any liens; if a lien is present, the seller must provide a lien release from the lender.
