When buying a car from a private seller in Oklahoma, you must get the original Certificate of Title. The seller must sign their name on the back of the title to transfer ownership. It is crucial that the seller's signature is notarized by a certified Notary Public. Do not purchase a vehicle if the seller's signature has not been notarized, as the transfer will be rejected.
You will pay excise tax when you title the vehicle in your name. The excise tax is 3.25% of the vehicle's purchase price. This tax is paid directly to Service Oklahoma or a licensed tag agency, not to the seller. You will also pay separate fees for the title transfer and registration.
While the notarized title is the most critical document, a separate bill of sale is highly recommended. It serves as your official receipt and a legal record of the transaction. The bill of sale should include the vehicle's year, make, model, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), the final purchase price, date of sale, and the names and signatures of both the buyer and seller.
Ensure the seller's name on their government-issued ID matches the name printed on the front of the title. Check the title for any listed lienholders (like a bank or credit union). If a lien is present, the seller must provide you with a lien release document from that financial institution, proving the loan has been fully paid.
You have 30 days from the date of purchase to transfer the title and register the vehicle at Service Oklahoma or a licensed tag agency. If you wait longer than 30 days, you will be charged late-transfer penalty fees.
