To transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Title" section on the back of your Certificate of Title. You need to:
Enter the buyer's full name and address.
Fill in the exact odometer reading.
Enter the date of the sale and the final purchase price.
Sign and print your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title.
Do not use white-out or erase mistakes. Any alterations can void the title, requiring you to apply for a duplicate before you can complete the sale.
In Massachusetts, vehicles with a model year of 1980 or older are exempt from titling. If you are selling an exempt vehicle, you do not need a title. Instead, you will provide the buyer with a properly executed Bill of Sale and the vehicle's last registration certificate. For all vehicles model year 1981 and newer, a title is required.
You cannot legally sell a vehicle without a title (for 1981+ models). If yours is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title from the RMV. If there is a lien on the vehicle from a loan, you must pay it off completely. The lender will then provide you with a lien release, which is required to obtain a clear title to provide to the buyer.
While the title is the primary legal document, a Bill of Sale is highly recommended. It serves as a legal receipt and proof of the transaction details, protecting both you and the buyer. The Bill of Sale should include:
The vehicle's year, make, model, and VIN.
The purchase price and date of sale.
The full names and signatures of both the seller and the buyer.

This means you are not legally required to offer a warranty or a refund if the car has problems after the sale.
