To transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Certificate of Title" section on the back of your title. You need to:
Enter the buyer's full name and address.
Fill in the exact odometer reading.
Enter the date of the sale.
Sign and print your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title.
Do not use white-out or erase mistakes. Any alterations can void the title, requiring you to apply for a duplicate before you can complete the sale.
You cannot legally sell a vehicle without a title in Indiana. If yours is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title from the BMV. If there is a lien on the vehicle from a loan, you must pay it off completely. The lender will then provide you with a lien release, which is required to obtain a clear title to provide to the buyer.

No. Private sellers do not collect sales tax. The buyer is responsible for paying the 7% state sales tax directly to the BMV when they transfer the title into their name.
Generally, no. For most private sales, a pre-sale inspection is not required. However, the buyer will need to have a VIN inspection completed by a law enforcement officer if the vehicle was previously titled in another state or if it has a salvage title.
In Indiana, the license plates belong to the seller, not the vehicle. You must remove your license plates before the buyer drives away. You can then transfer the plates to another vehicle you own, return them to a BMV branch, or destroy them. Never let a buyer drive away with your plates.
Always prioritize your safety. Arrange to meet in a public, well-lit, and busy location. The parking lot of a police station, a bank, or a major retail center are all excellent choices.
