Yes, you generally need a paper title to transfer ownership. If you have lost your title, you must apply for a certified copy of the title (Form VTR-34) at your local county tax office before you can complete the sale. You will need to show a valid photo ID and pay a small fee.
On the back of the Texas title, you must sign your name in the seller section exactly as it appears on the front. You must also print your name and enter the date of sale. Do not use white-out or cross anything out, as this will void the document.
If your vehicle is less than 20 years old, you are required by federal and state law to record the exact mileage in the odometer reading section on the back of the title. Both you and the buyer must sign to verify this reading.
Texas does not require the seller to have a current inspection sticker just to sell the car, but the buyer will need a passing inspection to register it in their name. However, selling a car with a current, passing inspection report can make it more attractive to potential buyers and assure them the vehicle is roadworthy.
While private sales in Texas are generally "as is," honesty is the best policy. If you know about significant issues, disclosing them protects you from future disputes. You are not legally required to offer a warranty.

Private sellers in Texas generally do not collect sales tax from the buyer. The buyer is responsible for paying the Standard Presumptive Value (SPV) tax or the sales tax on the purchase price (whichever is higher) when they register the vehicle. Your main cost will likely be the fee for a duplicate title if you don't have the original.
If you have a lien on the vehicle, you cannot transfer the title until the loan is paid off. You will need to contact your lender to determine the payoff amount. Once paid, the lender will release the lien, and you can obtain a clear title to sign over to the buyer.
You should provide the buyer with:
The signed original title.
A signed Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U), with the sales price clearly listed.
Any maintenance records or warranty documents you want to include.
