To transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Title" section on your Certificate of Title. You will need to enter the buyer's name and address, the sale date, the purchase price, and the current odometer reading. Then, sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title. If the title lists two owners joined by "AND," both must sign. If it says "OR," only one signature is required. Avoid using correction fluid or making errors, as this can void the title.
You cannot sell a car without a title. If your title is lost or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate from the DOL before the sale. If you have an outstanding auto loan, you need to pay it off completely. Your lender will then release the lien, allowing you to get a clear title to sign over to the buyer.
Yes, a Bill of Sale is required for all private vehicle sales. You can use the state's official Vehicle Bill of Sale (Form TD-420-065). This document serves as a legal receipt and must include the vehicle's year, make, model, VIN, the sale date, purchase price, and the names and signatures of both you and the buyer. Both parties should keep a copy for their records.
The buyer is responsible for paying all applicable taxes. Private sellers do not collect sales tax. The buyer will pay the use tax (which is the same rate as sales tax) directly to the DOL when they transfer the title and register the vehicle in their name.
In Washington, the license plates stay with the car. You should leave the license plates on the vehicle when you sell it. The new owner will transfer the plates into their name when they register the car. Once you file the Report of Sale, your legal connection to those plates ends.
Always prioritize your safety. Arrange meetings in a public, well-lit, and busy location. The parking lot of a police station, a bank, or a major retail store are all excellent choices. Never invite a stranger to your home. When a buyer requests a test drive, check their driver's license and always accompany them on the drive.
