To make your listing as attractive as possible, upload high quality and clear photos. Don't forget to include a description of the condition of the vehicle, how you have used it, etc.
You want to have your vehicle title and other required documents. Each state has different documentation when selling your used vehicle, so be sure to look into that ahead of time!

To transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Ownership" section on the back of your Certificate of Title. You need to:
Enter the buyer's full name and address.
Fill in the exact odometer reading.
Enter the purchase price and date of sale.
Sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title.
Crucially, your signature must be notarized. You and the buyer should go to a notary public together to complete the title transfer. Do not sign the title until you are in the presence of the notary.
You cannot sell a car without a title. If your title is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title from your local Clerk of Courts Title Office. If you have an outstanding loan on the vehicle, you must pay it off completely. The lender will then release the lien, which allows you to obtain a clear, "lien-free" title to provide to the buyer.
It depends on where the buyer lives. Most of Ohio does not require a vehicle inspection. However, if the buyer lives in one of the seven "E-Check" counties (Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, or Summit), they will need a valid emissions test certificate to register the car. While it is the buyer's responsibility to get the test, providing a recent, passing E-Check certificate can make your vehicle much more appealing to buyers in those areas.
While the notarized title is the primary legal document, a separate Bill of Sale is highly recommended for all private sellers. It serves as a receipt and a legal record of the transaction details. The Bill of Sale should include:
The vehicle's year, make, model, and VIN.
The purchase price and date of sale.
The full names and addresses of both you and the buyer.
A statement that the vehicle is sold "as-is."
Both you and the buyer should sign the document and keep a copy for your records.
The buyer is responsible for paying all applicable sales and use taxes. As a private seller, you do not collect sales tax. The buyer will pay the tax directly to the Clerk of Courts Title Office when they transfer the title into their name.
In Ohio, the license plates belong to the seller, not the vehicle. You must remove your license plates before the buyer drives away. You can then transfer the plates to another vehicle you own, return them to a deputy registrar's office, or destroy them. Never let a buyer drive away with your plates.
