To transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Title" section on the back of your Certificate of Title. You need to:
Enter the buyer's full name and address.
Fill in the exact odometer reading.
Enter the date of sale.
Sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title.
Do not use white-out or erase mistakes. Any alterations can void the title, requiring you to apply for a duplicate before you can complete the sale.
You cannot legally sell a vehicle without a title in New Mexico. If yours is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title from the MVD. If there is a lien on the vehicle from a loan, you must pay off the loan completely. The lender will then provide you with a lien release, which is required to obtain a clear title to provide to the buyer.

VIN Inspection: If you are selling a vehicle with an out-of-state title, the buyer will need to have a VIN inspection completed by an MVD agent or a law enforcement officer.
In New Mexico, the license plates belong to the seller, not the vehicle. You must remove your license plates before the buyer drives away. You can then transfer the plates to another vehicle you own, return them to an MVD Field Office, or destroy them. Never let a buyer drive away with your plates.
