To legally transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Title" section on the back of your Illinois Certificate of Title. You need to:
Print the buyer's full name and address.
Enter the exact odometer reading (without tenths of a mile).
Fill in the date of the sale.
Sign and print your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title.
Do not use white-out or make any corrections, as this can void the title. If you make a mistake, you will need to apply for a corrected title.
If your title is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title from the Secretary of State using Form VSD 190 (Application for Vehicle Transaction(s)). You cannot sell the car without a title. If you still have a loan on the vehicle, the lienholder's name will be on the title. You must pay off the loan in full. The lender will then release the lien, and you can obtain a clear title to sign over to the buyer.
