To transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Vehicle Title" section, typically found on the bottom of the front or the back of your Certificate of Title. You need to:
Print the buyer's full legal name and address.
Enter the date of the sale.
Fill in the accurate odometer reading (required for vehicles under 20 years old).
Sign your name exactly as it appears on the face of the title.
Note: If the title document specifically has a space for a notary's signature, your signature must be notarized. However, most standard Alaska titles do not require notarization for the seller's signature.
This is the most important step for your protection. Immediately after you sell your car privately, you must submit a Notice of Transfer Pending (Form 812) to the Alaska DMV. You can do this online or by dropping the form off at a DMV office. While the title is the primary legal document, a Bill of Sale is highly recommended for all private sellers. It serves as a receipt and helps verify the purchase price if questions arise later. The Alaska DMV provides a generic Bill of Sale (Form 825) you can use. It should include:
The vehicle's year, make, model, and VIN.
The purchase price and date of sale.
