To transfer ownership, you must complete the "Assignment of Title" section on the back of your Certificate of Title. You need to:
Enter the buyer's full name and address.
Fill in the exact odometer reading (without tenths of a mile).
Enter the date of the sale.
Sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title. All listed owners must sign.
Do not use white-out or erase mistakes. Any alterations can void the title, requiring you to apply for a duplicate before completing the sale.
In Vermont, vehicles with a model year of 2008 or older are exempt from titling. If you are selling an exempt vehicle, you do not need a title to transfer ownership. Instead, you will provide the buyer with a properly executed Bill of Sale and the vehicle's last registration certificate. For all vehicles model year 2009 and newer, a title is required.
If you've lost the title for your 2009 or newer vehicle, you must apply for a duplicate title from the VT DMV before you can sell it. If you have an outstanding loan on the car, you must pay it off completely. The lender will then provide you with a lien release, allowing you to obtain a clear title to sign over to the buyer.
Yes. A Bill of Sale is required for all private vehicle sales in Vermont. It serves as a legal receipt and proof of the purchase price. You must use the official Vermont Bill of Sale and Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form TA-VT-05). This document must include:
The vehicle's year, make, model, and VIN.
The purchase price and date of sale.
The full names, addresses, and signatures of both the seller and the buyer.
The odometer reading.
Both you and the buyer should keep a signed copy for your records.
No. Private sellers do not collect sales tax. The buyer is responsible for paying the 6% Purchase and Use Tax directly to the DMV when they register the vehicle in their name.
No. In Vermont, the seller is not required to have the vehicle inspected before a private sale. The responsibility for obtaining a valid safety inspection falls on the buyer. The buyer must have the vehicle inspected within 15 days of registering it. However, providing a recent, passing inspection sticker can make your vehicle more appealing to buyers.
In Vermont, the license plates belong to the seller, not the vehicle. You must remove your license plates from the vehicle before the buyer drives away. You can then transfer the plates to another vehicle you own or return them to a DMV office to cancel the registration. Never let a buyer drive away with your plates.
