To transfer ownership, you must complete the "assignment" section on your Certificate of Title. This is usually on the bottom of the front or the back of the document, depending on the title version. You need to:
Enter the date of sale.
Fill in the sales price.
Enter the exact odometer reading (required for vehicles 10 years old or newer).
Print the buyer's full name and address.
Sign your name as the seller. All owners listed on the title must sign.
Important: Do not use white-out or erase mistakes. Any alterations can void the title. If you make a mistake, you must apply for a duplicate title before you can complete the sale.
This is a critical step for private sellers in Minnesota. You are required to report the sale to the DVS within 10 days of the transaction. You can do this online via the DVS website or by mailing the detached "Notice of Sale" portion of your title.
