The seller must sign the back of the original Georgia Certificate of Title in the designated seller section. You will then take this signed document directly to the Coffee County Tax Commissioner's office in Douglas to finish the transfer and put the car in your name.
We strongly advise using the official Georgia Department of Revenue Form T-7 (Bill of Sale). This document acts as your official receipt. It protects you and the seller from future disputes about the sale price, date, or vehicle condition. Make sure it includes the VIN, exact sale price, date, and signatures from both parties.
You will pay standard title and registration fees, plus the TAVT, when you put the car in your name. The state bases the TAVT on the fair market value of the car, not the cash amount you paid the seller. You only pay this tax once.
In Georgia, the license plate stays with the seller. The state registers plates to an individual person, not the car itself. The seller must remove their plate before you drive away. Never drive the vehicle with the seller's plates still attached.
Always prioritize your safety by meeting in a public, well-lit area during daylight hours. Good options include:
1. The public parking lot of the Douglas Police Department or Coffee County Sheriff's Office.
2. A local bank parking lot during business hours, which gives you a secure place to handle cash.
3. A busy commercial area, such as the shopping centers along Bowens Mill Road in Douglas.
