To legally transfer ownership, the seller must sign the back of the original Georgia Certificate of Title. Every owner listed on the front must sign as a seller. Bring your properly signed title to the Habersham County Tax Commissioner’s Office, located just up the road in Clarkesville, to complete the transfer and put the car in your name.
While not always strictly mandatory if the title has spaces for the sale price and date, using the official Georgia Department of Revenue Form T-7 (Bill of Sale) is highly recommended. It serves as your official receipt and protects both you and the seller from future disputes about the sale price, date, or vehicle condition. It should include the VIN, vehicle details, sale price, date, and signatures of both parties.
Georgia gives you a strict seven-day grace period to drive your newly purchased car without a license plate. To drive legally during this week, you must keep the fully signed and dated Bill of Sale, the properly signed title, and your active proof of insurance inside the car. These documents prove to law enforcement that you just bought the vehicle.
Always prioritize safety by meeting in a public, well-lit area during the day. Good options include:
1. The parking lot of the Demorest Police Department.
2. Public parking areas near the Piedmont University campus police station.
3. A busy, highly visible commercial shopping center along US Highway 441 during business hours.
Before paying, carefully inspect the physical title document. Ensure the seller’s name on the title matches their government-issued ID. Critically, verify that the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the title perfectly matches the VIN on the car’s dashboard and driver-side door jamb.
A lien means a lender still has a financial claim on the vehicle. Look at the front of the Georgia title to find any active lienholders. If a lender is listed, the seller must provide you with an official paper lien release document from that bank before you can get a clear title in your name.
