To legally transfer ownership, the seller must sign the back of the original Georgia Certificate of Title in the designated "Seller" section. Georgia does not require a notary signature for a standard vehicle title transfer. You will take this signed document directly to the Macon County Tax Commissioner's office in Oglethorpe to complete the transfer process.
We strongly recommend using the official Georgia Department of Revenue Form T-7 (Bill of Sale), even if the local tag office does not strictly demand it. This document acts as your official receipt. It protects both you and the seller from future disputes regarding the sale price, date, or vehicle condition. Ensure it includes the VIN, vehicle details, exact sale price, date, and signatures from both parties.
You do not pay standard sales tax on private party cars in Georgia. The state applies the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) to these sales instead. This rule covers casual sales between private individuals.
Carefully inspect the title document before handing over any money. Ask to see the seller’s government-issued ID and ensure the name matches the printed title perfectly. You must also verify that the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) printed on the title perfectly matches the physical VIN on the car’s dashboard and driver-side door jamb.
A listed lien means a bank or lender still has a financial claim on the vehicle. You can check the front of the Georgia title for any active lienholders. If a lien exists, the seller must give you a completed and signed lien release document (Form T-4) from their bank before you can secure a clear title.
We recommend getting a complete vehicle history report from a trusted service like KarKiosk. This step is critical for checking past accidents, verifying the true mileage, and making sure the vehicle does not hide a salvage or rebuilt title status.
