To legally transfer ownership, the seller must sign the back of the original Georgia Certificate of Title in the “Seller” section. A notary is not required for a standard title transfer. Take the signed title to the Telfair County Tax Commissioner’s office in McRae to finalize the transfer and register the vehicle in your name.
It is best to meet in a public, well-lit location, such as:
1. The Telfair County Sheriff’s Office parking lot
2. The McRae-Helena Police Department parking lot
3. A busy commercial area like a bank parking lot or a large retail store during business hours
Ask to see the seller’s government-issued ID and ensure the name matches the title. Carefully check that the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the title matches the one on the vehicle’s dashboard and driver door frame. Only proceed if all details match precisely.
The front of the Georgia title will list any active liens. If a lien is present, the seller must provide a completed and signed lien release (Form T-4) from their lender. Never pay for a car or complete the sale until you have a clear title or verified lien release.
It is highly recommended to get a vehicle history report from a reputable service before purchase. This can reveal prior accidents, flood or salvage status, mileage inconsistencies, or open recalls.
Georgia does not require a notary for standard vehicle title transfers. The only time a notary might be necessary is if the title specifically indicates “must be notarized” or involves a power of attorney or special legal situation.
The seller must apply for a replacement title through the Georgia Department of Revenue before you complete your purchase. Never pay or exchange funds for a car without having the original, signed title in hand.
