Always look at the original title before you pay the seller. Check that the seller's name exactly matches the name printed on the front of the title. Ask to see their driver's license to confirm their identity. If the title lists a bank or lender, the seller must give you a signed lien release. You cannot register the car in your name without this official release document.
Check the physical title for any tears, heavy stains, or alterations. If the title has crossed-out names or scribbled-out numbers, the tag office might reject it. Also, make sure the VIN on the title matches the VIN physically printed on the car's dashboard.
Look closely at how the names connect on the title. If the title lists multiple owners separated by the word "AND," all listed owners must sign the title to transfer it to you. If the word "OR" separates the names, only one of the owners needs to sign.
We strongly advise against buying a car without a title. The seller should apply for a replacement title through the state of Georgia before they try to sell the vehicle to you.
The state does not require a mechanical inspection in Putnam County, but we strongly recommend getting one. Take the car to a trusted local mechanic in the Eatonton area to check the engine, brakes, and transmission before you hand over any cash.
Always ask the seller for the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) before you meet up. Run the VIN through a reputable vehicle history report service to check for past accidents, flood damage, or a salvage brand on the title.
