FAQs about Cars for Sale by Owner

How do I verify the seller actually owns the vehicle? toggle

Always ask to see the seller's driver's license or state ID. Compare the name on their ID directly to the name printed on the front of the original certificate of title. If the names do not match exactly, the seller does not have the legal right to transfer the car to you.

Should I check the vehicle's history before buying? toggle

Yes. We highly recommend running a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) check before you hand over any money. A VIN check tells you if the car has a branded title, which means an insurance company previously declared it a total loss, salvage, rebuilt, or flood-damaged.

How do we properly transfer the car title? toggle

To officially change ownership, both you and the seller must fill out the title assignment section on the back of the certificate. You must write your full legal name, current address, the exact date of sale, and the current odometer reading. Both parties then need to print and sign their names.

What are the state fees for the title and license plate? toggle

Along with the TAVT, you will pay a few standard administrative costs. The state charges an $18 fee to process your title application. You will also pay a $20 fee to receive your new license plate.

Can I drive the car home using the seller's license plate? toggle

No. In Georgia, the license plate belongs to the individual driver, not the vehicle itself. The seller must remove their plate and keep it. You cannot legally drive the car using the previous owner's license plate.

Where do I register the car and how much time do I have? toggle

You must complete your title application and vehicle registration at the Worth County Tax Commissioner's Office in Sylvester. Bring your valid Georgia driver's license, the properly signed title, proof of auto insurance, and your payment for the taxes and fees. Georgia law gives you exactly seven days from the date of purchase to complete this process and avoid late penalties.
