To legally transfer ownership, the seller must sign the back of the Georgia Certificate of Title. You and the seller must fill out the assignment section completely. Once you have the assigned title, take it to the Tift County Tax Commissioner's Office in Tifton. You will also need a completed Form MV-1 (Title/Tag Application), your valid Georgia driver's license, and proof of active auto insurance.
In Georgia, the license plate stays with the seller. Plates are registered to the individual, not the vehicle. The seller must remove their plate and cancel their registration before you take possession of the car. Never drive the car with the seller's plates on it.
Georgia law gives you seven days from the date of purchase to register a vehicle bought in a private sale. To drive your newly purchased car home legally without a license plate, you must carry the properly assigned title, a dated Bill of Sale, and proof of active Georgia liability insurance inside the vehicle at all times.
Always prioritize safety by meeting in a public, well-lit area during the day. Good options in Tift County include:
1. The public parking area of the Tifton Police Department or the Tift County Sheriff's Office.
2. A busy shopping area, such as the Walmart Supercenter parking lot on Virginia Avenue, during regular business hours.
3. A well-lit, active gas station near the major I-75 interchanges.
If the seller cannot find the title, they must apply for a replacement title from the Georgia Department of Revenue before they can legally sell the vehicle to you. Never exchange money for a car without receiving a properly assigned, original title in hand.
